# Temps vs CapRover

> CapRover is a free Apache 2.0 self-hosted PaaS with Docker Swarm clustering and a one-click app store. Temps adds built-in analytics, error tracking, session replay and uptime monitoring to the same git-push workflow.

Same deploys. Observability included.

## Short answer

What they share: Both are free, open-source, self-hosted PaaS platforms with git-based deploys, automatic SSL and multi-node support (Temps under MIT / Apache 2.0, CapRover under Apache 2.0). Where they diverge: Temps includes analytics, error tracking, session replay, uptime monitoring and HA-capable managed databases. CapRover ships server metrics through NetData but leaves application observability and database HA to you: matching what Temps bundles costs about $211/month of SaaS (Plausible, Sentry Team, LogRocket) or several more services to operate. What CapRover has that Temps doesn't: A large one-click app catalogue and years of production use on Docker Swarm. Temps is pre-1.0 (v0.1.0 prereleases) with a smaller catalogue.

## TL;DR

| Dimension | Temps | CapRover | Better fit |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Licence and hosting cost | $0, MIT / Apache 2.0, self-hosted | $0, Apache 2.0, self-hosted | Tie |
| Built-in observability | Analytics, errors, replay, uptime | Server metrics only; ~$211/mo of SaaS to match | Temps |
| Managed databases | Postgres (with HA), MariaDB, MongoDB, Redis | Single containers, HA is yours to build | Temps |
| One-click app catalogue | Smaller | Large, genuinely useful catalogue | CapRover |
| Maturity | Pre-1.0 (v0.1.0 prereleases) | Years of production use on Docker Swarm | CapRover |

## Key differences

- **Observability in the core:** CapRover deploys apps; monitoring is something you add from the one-click app store and then operate yourself. Temps includes analytics, error tracking, session replay and uptime checks in the same binary.
- **Preview environments per pull request:** Temps creates a preview environment for every pull request automatically. On CapRover this is an app-per-branch convention you script and tear down yourself.
- **Managed databases with HA:** CapRover's databases come from one-click apps — single containers you back up yourself. Temps provides managed PostgreSQL with high-availability clusters and scheduled backups.
- **One binary, no Swarm to operate:** CapRover builds on Docker Swarm, so scaling means understanding Swarm. Temps handles multi-node itself, which is one fewer system in the failure path.

## Features

| Feature | Temps | CapRover |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Git push deployments | Yes | Yes |
| Web dashboard | Yes | Yes (Long-standing strength) |
| Dockerfile and buildpack builds | Yes | Yes |

| Automatic SSL | Yes | Yes |
| One-click app store | No | Yes (Large catalogue — a real advantage) |
| Preview environments | Yes (Per pull request) | No (Manual app-per-branch) |
| Managed PostgreSQL | Yes (HA clusters, scheduled backups) | Yes (One-click container, no HA) |
| S3-compatible storage | Yes (Built in) | No (Not in core; MinIO available as a one-click app) |

| Server metrics | Yes | Yes (Via NetData) |
| Transactional email | Yes (Through SES, Scaleway or an SMTP relay) | No |
| Open source | Yes (MIT / Apache 2.0) | Yes (Apache 2.0, with an appendix covering its paid features) |

## Pricing

| Item | Temps | CapRover |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Software | $0 — MIT / Apache 2.0 | $0 — Apache 2.0 |
| Infrastructure | Your own VPS | Your own VPS |
| With full observability | $0 (included) | $0 plus tools to run yourself, or ~$211/mo SaaS |
| With HA databases | $0 (included) | Single containers — HA is yours to build |

Both are free and open source, so this is not a pricing comparison. The cost that differs is operational: on CapRover, analytics, error tracking, session replay and uptime monitoring are either more services you run or SaaS subscriptions you buy (Plausible, Sentry Team and LogRocket come to about $211/month).

## Choose Temps if

- You want analytics, error tracking and uptime monitoring without adding services
- You want preview environments created per pull request automatically
- You need managed Postgres with high availability rather than a single container
- You would rather not operate Docker Swarm to scale across nodes
- You want session replay and transactional email in the same platform

## Choose CapRover if

- The one-click app store matters to you — it is a large, genuinely useful catalogue
- You already run Docker Swarm and are comfortable with it
- You want a mature project with years of production use behind it
- Deployment is all you need and you have observability elsewhere
- You prefer assembling your own stack from one-click components

## Migrating from CapRover (easy)

Temps has a CapRover import wizard: it connects to your CapRover instance, discovers the apps and one-click databases, and recreates them as Temps projects with their build settings, environment variables and a live deployment. Anything it cannot move moves the usual way: images and Dockerfiles port directly, and databases need a dump and restore. The one thing without an equivalent is the one-click app store, so check what you have deployed from it before switching.

## FAQ

### Is CapRover free?

The core is. CapRover is released under the Apache 2.0 licence and is free to self-host. It also sells some paid features, and an appendix to its licence restricts modifying or redistributing those. Temps is MIT / Apache 2.0; its paid Premium edition is a separate licence.

### Does CapRover support multiple servers?

Yes. CapRover supports clustering by adding nodes to a Docker Swarm cluster, and handles load balancing across them.

### Does CapRover include monitoring or analytics?

Not in its core. Monitoring tools can be deployed from the one-click app catalogue, but you run and maintain them yourself. Temps includes analytics, error tracking, session replay and uptime monitoring in the platform.

### Can I migrate from CapRover to Temps automatically?

Yes. The Temps import wizard connects to your CapRover instance, discovers the apps and one-click databases running on it, and recreates them as Temps projects with build settings, environment variables and a live deployment. The CapRover migration guide covers each step.

### Is Temps or CapRover easier to start with?

They are comparable for a first deployment. CapRover has the larger one-click catalogue; Temps needs less assembly if you want observability, because it is already there.
